A healthy person who lives to the ripe old age of 80 will live through around 29,000 days.

248 of these will be spent looking for a parking space. 365 days in a pub. 9490 will be spent sleeping and 244 days laughing. You’ll spend 4380 of them at work and 61 days will be spent sat in traffic. 730 days will be spent in meetings and 38 spent arguing. Ladies, you will spend 366 days deciding what to wear and 548 days doing your hair. For 546 days you’ll be on the toilet and for just 260 days you’ll be exercising.

Yep, you read that right. You’ll spend over twice as long on the toilet than you will exercising. A recent report showed that the average adult in the UK spends just 90 minutes exercising a week but will easily spend 3 hours and 9 minutes on the loo. The NHS guidelines say that the minimum amount of moderate exercise each week should be 150 minutes. Shockingly, 20% of people are active for less than 30 minutes every week!  If every adult reached the 150 minute target, their days spent exercising would shoot up to 433 days. 64% of the nation spend at least 6 hours a day sitting down and don’t get anywhere near as much exercise as they need to be having – this is mainly being blamed on having busy working lives and family commitment.

It’s not hard to add a brisk walk into your daily routine. Walk to the next bus stop instead of jumping on the closest one to your house, or why not encourage your colleagues to get out the office and go for a lunchtime walk round the block?

It seems that modern living has stripped our lives of physical activity. Steve Ward, Chief Executive of UKactive says: ‘ The major health concern here is our lack of exercise, but things like poor diet, lack of exertion and our tendency to play on smartphones in the bathroom are all other factors that are driving this imbalance’.

So maybe instead of spending our time on the toilet, perusing what the latest meme on Facebook is, we all need to get up off the toilet and out into the real world!
