Fat Loss and Hydration? Winter is here, the days are shorter and it’s cold and gloomy outside. At this time of year we all love a hot drink to combat those winter chills. However, necking 4 latte’s a day may perk you up temporarily but it won’t do you too many favours hydration wise. We often underestimate the importance of hydration for fat loss and general health and well-being. Let’s run through a few of the reasons why you should reach for that glass of water more often before you’re parched.

Water plays a fundamental role in aiding our metabolism. The human body is mostly made up of water, almost two thirds to be in fact. Water is involved in so many important body processes from regulating our temperature, to lubricating our joints to removing waste.

Our metabolism, or “metabolic rate” measures the number of calories we use in order to maintain our body’s vital functions. This process encompasses every one of our chemical and physical reactions in our tissues. In particular the ability for our body to fuel itself through the processes of breaking down proteins, fats and carbs. Dehydration impairs the body’s metabolic rate because water is required for all these processes to work. Staying hydrated regularly will maximise your body’s fat burning ability by speeding up your metabolism when it coincides with an active lifestyle.

Staying hydrated therefore is extremely important. It’s recommended that you drink 2 – 4 litres of water per day depending on your body’s composition. That may sound like a lot, but it will benefit you both inside and out. Some of these benefits include.

  • Healthier joints
  • Improved digestion
  • Healthier skin
  • Healthier teeth and bones
  • Reduced fatigue
  • Increased metabolism of fat

My tip is to start drinking early in the morning, you don’t want to be getting up for half the night! If you find water a bit boring, try adding some lemon or lime for a bit of flavour.
